![]() ![]() Lightroom 5 was one of the few programs, I actually bought as a student – and felt happy with. Although I am in no way a professional photographer, I fell in love with this tool. I used Adobe Lightroom for the past ten years. I will explain the required migration steps, my photography workflow as well as a bit about the technical background. This article describes my migration from Lightroom to open source alternatives, such as Darktable, using xmp sidecar files. When testing, remember that darktable created the xmp sidecar file for each images used as you may want to delete these so that the images are imported in their raw unaltered state for the next round of testingĬurrently the testing is on hold as I have found that a significant amount of DNG files cannot be read by darktable.Leaving Adobe Lightroom or how to migrate from Lightroom to open source alternatives Very handy in my case where I can have one set for the commercial images, and one set for personal images. ![]() The second is, if you want to have several different libraries, you can save these away and restore them for the library you wish to use. ![]() If you test some imports, customisation or such and want to start again, simply delete these files and next time you start darktable you will have a virgin setup again. This is extremely convenient for two reasons. If these files are missing darktable will recreate them and treat them as a brand new setup. These are stored in drive:\users\username\AppData\local\darktable\ Note, AppData is a hidden directory. To keep track of keytags, darktable customisations etc, darktable has a set of files. It allows you to remove directories of images out of darktable, then, at a later date, re-import them and they will be back in darktable along with all the changes and change history that you have performed for each image. So an image named AAA001.NEF will have an associated xmp file named in the same directory In other words each image will have a associated NAME.xmp file where NAME is the original filename complete with suffix. The majority of my images are either web based or printed at client sites.ĭarktable writes modifications, keytags etc to xmp sidecars. This is not a problem for me as I am not a heavy printer of images. Therefore printing must be done using another method for now. This is underway from my understanding but is not available at the present time. However at this stage one has to be aware that the windows version does not have a print module.
